Renewable energy - its importance for Lithuania and the future of Lithuania

4/25/2025

Lithuania has set an ambitious goal: to become fully energy independent and climate neutral by 2050. This objective is outlined in the National Energy Independence Strategy approved in 2024. One of the most critical milestones has already been achieved — in 2025, Lithuania disconnected from the Russian-controlled electricity system and successfully synchronized with the Continental European grid. Going forward, the country plans to produce 100% of its energy from renewable sources, with continued investments in wind, solar, biomass, energy storage, and grid infrastructure. This is not only a geopolitical decision but a long-term vision for ensuring a clean, safe, and stable energy future for Lithuania.

Why is renewable energy becoming a global priority?

The importance of renewable energy is no longer in question. Both global and European Union policies —alongside Lithuania's — clearly point in the same direction: the development of clean, sustainable, and local energy is one of the top priorities of the 21st century.

What does society think?

According to Eurobarometer data, 87% of EU citizens believe it is important to increase the use of renewable energy sources. In Lithuania, support is also strong — over 80% of people agree. Society increasingly recognizes that renewable energy is not only an environmental solution but also a guarantee of economic, political, and social well-being.

Lithuania and energy imports

Until now, Lithuania has imported the majority of its energy, which has made the country vulnerable to geopolitical risks, global price fluctuations, and supply insecurity. Expanding renewable energy is one of the most effective ways to reduce this dependency. Wind, solar, and biomass resources are domestic—they don't need to be bought, transported, or negotiated. They just need to be used.

Contribution to climate goals

Renewable energy also plays a direct role in mitigating climate change. Electricity production is one of the largest sources of CO₂ emissions worldwide. Transitioning to clean energy can significantly reduce these emissions. Lithuania has committed to becoming climate neutral by 2050, and this goal simply cannot be achieved without renewable energy.

Economic benefits and job creation

Investments in renewable energy deliver real economic value. New jobs are created — ranging from engineers and installers to project managers and IT specialists. Parks developed in rural areas bring additional revenue to municipalities and local businesses, strengthening communities. Over time, renewable energy projects help lower electricity prices and encourage the growth of local industry.

The future of energy is already here

Renewable energy is no longer a distant vision — it is a change happening right now. Every kilowatt-hour invested in green energy, every wind farm or solar power plant built brings us closer to a more sustainable, secure, and independent Lithuania.
